Police are investigating a burglary at the home of Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, where several belongings were taken.
Cheshire Police began enquiries after being called to reports of suspicious behaviour at a residential property on Wednesday evening.
“The person who contacted us said that three unidentified men were in the back garden of a neighbouring home,” Detective Inspector Dave Jarvis said. “When officers reached the location, the men were no longer there. However, it was established that the property had been burgled and that a number of items had been removed.
“An investigation is under way and officers are continuing their enquiries.”
Police were notified soon after Manchester United suffered a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como in Italy.
No members of Fernandes’ family were at the house when the incident occurred, while the intruders were reportedly inside for fewer than five minutes before police arrived.
Cheshire Police and Manchester United have been approached for a response.
Fernandes has played in every United match this season and wore the captain’s armband on Wednesday, when the club’s winless sequence across all competitions reached seven games.
After the latest setback, the 32-year-old urged his team-mates to show greater courage following another poor result.
United sit 13th in the Premier League table and will welcome Bournemouth on Sunday.
