Christantus Uche has confirmed that a serious right-knee injury could sideline the Nigeria and Getafe forward for most, and potentially all, of the 2026/27 campaign.
Uche faces lengthy lay-off
- The 23-year-old was carried from the field during Getafe’s friendly against Monaco last Thursday after a forceful collision with Monaco defender Christian Mawissa.
- Early examinations suggested severe bruising, but a subsequent MRI scan identified substantially greater damage, with major injuries affecting the ligaments and meniscus in Uche’s right knee.
- He is expected to have surgery within the next few days before beginning an extended rehabilitation programme.
“Not the end of the story”
Uche addressed the injury in an Instagram message, describing the moment as among the most difficult of his career. He said medical examinations had confirmed the seriousness of the problem and warned that his recovery would take a long time.
The forward also acknowledged the psychological strain of being forced away from football. Accepting a spell on the sidelines, he said, would be difficult because the sport is his passion, profession and greatest source of happiness. Uche added that he had never expected to face such a setback, while recognising that adversity is part of an athlete’s journey.
He promised to tackle rehabilitation with resilience, patience and determination, concentrating on the daily work required to return to the game he loves. Uche expressed gratitude to his family, Getafe’s players, coaching staff and medical personnel, along with supporters who had sent messages of encouragement. He ended with a firm declaration that this injury represented only one chapter, not the conclusion of his story.
The setback comes as another disappointment for Uche, who had been hoping to regain his momentum after a challenging loan spell with Crystal Palace last season.
