Coventry City have strengthened their squad for their return to the Premier League by agreeing to sign Nigeria forward Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest.
The two clubs have reached a deal for the permanent transfer of the Super Eagles striker, who is set to leave Forest and move to the newly promoted Sky Blues on a long-term contract.
Awoniyi is completing his medical examinations before Coventry formally announce his arrival. The 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Cup winner is expected to become the second Nigerian international brought in by manager Frank Lampard since the club secured promotion to the top flight.
He will join compatriot Frank Onyeka, who moved from Brentford at the end of the previous campaign. Onyeka’s arrival came as Coventry began preparing for their Premier League return.
Awoniyi spent four seasons at Nottingham Forest, scoring 23 times and registering six assists in 103 appearances across all competitions. Twenty-one of those goals came in the Premier League, where he made 90 outings and gained substantial experience at the highest domestic level.
The former Liverpool prospect joined Forest from Union Berlin in 2022 and was entering the final season of his contract with the club before securing his move to Coventry.
