Katsina Danmarna and Katsina Aldusar thrilled the home supporters with outstanding displays as they secured major honours at the 2026 Katsina International Polo Tournament, which concluded in spectacular fashion at the renowned Sir Usman Nagogo Polo Ground over the weekend.
The eight-day competition opened the new Nigerian polo season and ended with Danmarna taking the tournament’s premier trophy, the Nigerian Cup, as well as the prestigious Muhammadu Dikko Memorial Cup. Captained by Ibrahim Sarki, the side defeated strong challenges from former winners Jos Malcomines and Katsina Max Air to finish as the overall champions.
Katsina Aldusar also gave the local fans plenty to celebrate, beating two determined rivals to win the General Hassan Katsina Cup.
Several visiting teams also enjoyed successful campaigns. Kano Pop-Cola completed a double by winning the Talba Cup and the Wazirin Katsina Cup after negotiating a competitive field featuring more than six ambitious challengers. Jos Malcomines took the Governor’s Cup, while the Port Harcourt team from Rivers State claimed the Abdulmumin Kabir Cup. That trophy honours the Emir of Katsina and Life Chairman of Nigerian Polo, HRH Dr. Abdulmuminin Kabir Usman.
Kaduna Trappco finished second in the Talba Cup, with Kaduna Mulhali Ranch taking the runners-up position in the Wazirin Katsina Cup. Katsina Max Air were also runners-up in both the Nigerian Cup and the Muhammadu Dikko Memorial Cup.
Elsewhere, Katsina Shagumba captured the sought-after Kabir Usman Cup, while Kano Golden Alchemy emerged victorious in the Maidabino Cup competition.
The yearly celebration extended beyond the polo grounds, with notable cultural activities including the customary turbaning of Katsina Polo Club President Sanusi Kabir Usman. Kaduna Polo First Vice President General Kazir Kapeh was also inducted into the Katsina traditional council.
At the closing ceremony, Katsina Polo Club Chairman Muhammadu Sarki welcomed the tournament’s successful outcome and conveyed his appreciation to the Katsina State Government, the Katsina Emirate Council, sponsors and all visiting teams for their backing.
Sarki praised the competitors for maintaining discipline and showing sportsmanship during the tournament. He said the club remains committed to combining competition with culture and community traditions, creating a memorable occasion for polo followers throughout the country.
