Egypt is weighing up a push to stage the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations while also mapping out a longer-term plan for star forward Mohamed Salah to stay involved with the national team through the 2030 World Cup, according to Egyptian Football Association board member Hamada El-Sherbini.
Speaking about the proposal, El-Sherbini said the issue has been a central topic in discussions, adding that Egypt believes it has both the capability and the facilities required to deliver the tournament. He pointed to the country’s existing infrastructure as a key strength that would help ensure a successful competition.
He also noted that the matter is being treated with seriousness at the leadership level, with political authorities prepared to offer the necessary backing. El-Sherbini said Egypt is capable of hosting major FIFA events, including the FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Futsal World Cup, but emphasized that winning the right to host AFCON in 2028 remains the immediate priority.
El-Sherbini further expressed confidence that Salah, Egypt’s captain, will still be part of the squad for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. In his remarks, he suggested that while the federation faces significant challenges ahead, the goal is continued progress and further success for Egyptian football over the coming years.
Egypt most recently hosted the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019.
