Ekiti Governor Approves October 31 Date for 2026 Ikogosi Road Race

The 2026 Ikogosi Road Race is scheduled for October 31 after receiving formal approval from Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, whose administration hopes to use the event to advance youth development, grassroots talent identification and economic activity across the state.

Oyebanji’s support for the 17.5-kilometre competition reflects his government’s commitment to lasting, youth-led programmes capable of supporting small businesses, expanding sports tourism and encouraging infrastructure improvements throughout the region.

Following the previous race’s international commendation for efficient organisation, strong athlete care and the timely distribution of prize money, organisers are preparing an edition designed to meet international athletics requirements.

Participation is projected to rise to approximately 8,000 athletes from Nigeria and other countries, compared with an estimated 5,000 runners in 2025.

The Ikogosi Marathon Initiative is staging the event in partnership with the Ekiti State Government, while Governor Biodun Oyebanji has again pledged his administration’s backing for the race.

A total prize fund of ₦30 million will be divided between elite competitors and qualifying runners who are Ekiti indigenes. The purse will include designated opportunities for local athletes competing alongside the elite field.

Competitors will cover 17.5km between Ilawe-Ekiti and the Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort. The 2025 race received praise for its smooth delivery, attention to runners’ welfare and swift settlement of prize awards.

Its impact is expected to extend beyond the sporting contest, with increased business for hotels, transport operators, caterers and traders. The event will also give young professionals practical experience in areas such as event coordination, media operations, security and logistics.

The race is an important vehicle for discovering runners from the area. To help promote Ekiti talent at higher levels, organisers have created special benefits for state indigenes, including an award for the highest-placed Ekiti athlete who finishes among the overall top 10, supporting progression to national and international competition.

Entry is free, and registration is available at www.ikogosimarathon.com.
