Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Mbah and the National Sports Commission (NSC) have presented “Odum Eze, Lion King” as the official mascot of the 2026 National Sports Festival, known as the “Coal City Games”, while pledging to deliver a world-class competition.
Enugu unveils festival symbol
The mascot was introduced at the International Conference Centre in Enugu during the weekend, ahead of the national multi-sport event, which is scheduled for November 27 to December 11, 2026.
Deputy Governor Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai represented Governor Mbah at the ceremony. The governor said the lion was selected because it reflects Enugu State’s position as the seat of power, as well as qualities including strength, bravery, leadership and discipline.
He called on athletes competing at the festival to demonstrate those characteristics and asked the NSC to place greater emphasis on school sports as part of efforts to restore the development of talent at grassroots level.
Preparations gather pace
NSC Director-General Bukola Olapade described the hosting rights as historically significant, pointing out that Enugu is only the second state in the South-East to stage the festival after Imo hosted it in 1998.
After inspecting the facilities, Olapade praised Enugu’s progress in security and infrastructure. He said outstanding work on the swimming pool and indoor sports hall would be concluded before November.
- The Federal Government will provide support for infrastructure in the host state.
- The Coal City Games are expected to become the best-funded edition of the National Sports Festival in Nigeria’s history.
Enugu Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu said construction and renovation efforts at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the Awgu Games Village were consistent with the state’s ambition to establish itself as Africa’s leading sports hub.
Partners and dignitaries
Premium Trust Bank, the festival’s lead sponsor, renewed its commitment to the event through its Chief Business Officer for the South-South region, Aniebet Offiong.
Those present included Nigeria Olympic Committee President Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, Paralympic Committee President Sunday Odebode and Secretary to the Enugu State Government Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.
