FIBA Clears Sam Ahmedu for NBBF Board Role

FIBA has officially stated that retired Col. Sam Ahmedu faces no regulatory barrier to taking a place on the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation.

Quick facts

  • FIBA issued its confirmation in a letter dated October 19, 2026.
  • The correspondence was sent to new NBBF President Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha.
  • Ahmedu has served continuously within FIBA structures since 1997.
  • The NBBF’s new executive was elected for the 2026–2030 cycle on October 15, 2026.

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis confirmed in the letter that Ahmedu is Nigeria’s most senior figure within the federation’s administrative system. He has held membership roles in FIBA bodies without interruption since 1997.

Zagklis wrote on behalf of both himself and FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani, offering congratulations to Mustapha and the newly elected NBBF board. The October 15 Elective Congress installed the federation’s leadership for the 2026–2030 term.

The world governing body praised the NBBF for its focus on sound governance, open electoral procedures and compliance with its own constitution as well as international rules.

After the NBBF submitted a formal request for clarification, FIBA stated plainly that its regulations do not prevent Ahmedu from serving on the board. It also recognised outgoing NBBF President Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, a long-serving member of the FIBA Finance Commission, for his work in basketball.

The decision arrives at an important point for sports governance in Nigeria. Ahmedu, who leads FIBA Africa Zone 3 and has extensive experience in international administration, brings institutional knowledge, diplomatic experience and worldwide connections to the new leadership.

His potential inclusion on the NBBF board would strengthen the link between Nigerian basketball and the sport’s global decision-making structures. It could also support youth and grassroots programmes, high-performance ambitions and Nigeria’s representation abroad during the 2026–2030 administration.

With FIBA having removed any uncertainty surrounding his eligibility, basketball stakeholders are calling on the Nigerian game to make use of Ahmedu’s standing and administrative experience to drive development across the country.
