Comoros have pulled out of the qualifying competition for the 2027 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, leaving the island nation absent from the race for a place in the continental finals.
The decision reverses an earlier commitment to participate, as Comoros had confirmed its entry and featured in the official qualification draw. Financial pressure on the Comoros Football Federation is understood to have prompted the change, with the expense of assembling and managing a qualifying team proving beyond its available resources.
As a result, Comoros’ under-23 players will lose the chance to compete for qualification to the African tournament. The competition offers more than a continental title, traditionally also serving as a pathway towards the men’s Olympic football tournament.
The withdrawal highlights the budgetary difficulties faced by several African federations, which must finance age-group national teams while continuing to support their senior sides.
