
Diego Forlan has returned to football management with a major international appointment, taking charge of Uruguay’s senior team as well as its Under-20 squad.

The former Manchester United forward, now 47, has been named the new head coach of the Uruguayan national side. His responsibilities will also include leading the country’s Under-20 team.

Forlan’s arrival comes after Marcelo Bielsa left his position. Bielsa’s departure followed Uruguay’s failure to progress beyond the group phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A celebrated figure returns
Forlan, who also represented Atletico Madrid during his playing career, was described by the Uruguayan Football Association as one of the most significant figures in the history of La Celeste.
The association said his appointment opens a fresh era, confirming that Forlan would lead both the Under-20 and senior national teams.
