Gerard Pique has entered the Global Chess League as a strategic investor, adding the former Spain international to a growing list of athletes backing chess as it develops into a modern commercial entertainment product.
The World Cup-winning former Barcelona defender and founder of sports and media company Kosmos was unveiled as a new stakeholder in the Fyers American Gambits franchise at a news conference in Bengaluru, India, on Monday.
Pique said chess had held his interest for years because of its complexity, worldwide reach and the exceptional psychological resilience needed to compete at the highest level.
His investment arrives as the game undergoes a wider transformation, with franchise competitions, online media, commercial partnerships and streaming services helping present chess as a global sports property rather than solely a traditional board game.
Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin is also part of the American Gambits ownership group.
Norwegian cross-country skiing star Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo, a multiple Olympic champion, and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland have likewise invested this year in Norway Chess and the Total Chess World Championship, a competition supported by the International Chess Federation, known as FIDE.
Norwegian investor Morten Borge, who played a role in bringing Haaland into the venture, said the links between football and chess were particularly compelling.
Borge explained that while Haaland may appear to be an imposing physical force on the football field, elite performance also depends on planning, tactical awareness, timing and recognising critical moments — qualities that have clear equivalents in chess.
He added that Haaland was attracted to chess because of its focus on strategic thought and the composure needed to make decisions while under intense pressure.
The growing relationship between the two disciplines forms part of a broader sporting movement, with athletes turning to chess to improve focus, judgement and their ability to identify recurring patterns.
Pep Guardiola, the former Manchester City manager, has regularly used chess and tactical strategy as reference points when discussing football.
Other sports stars have also described chess as part of their preparation, among them former Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah and tennis legends Boris Becker and Novak Djokovic.
Meanwhile, the game is drawing increased interest from investors who see significant possibilities for commercial growth.
Supported by Indian technology companies Tech Mahindra and FIDE, the Global Chess League has attempted to attract larger audiences by using faster formats suited to television and digital consumption.
Borge said chess could replicate the progress made by several specialist sports that have successfully reached audiences beyond their established supporters.
He argued that the commercial potential was clear: darts had managed to build a major entertainment business despite its niche origins, while close to one billion people worldwide play chess.
American Gambits are scheduled to take part in the fourth Global Chess League season, which will be held in Bengaluru in September.
