Grassrunners, Abakaliki FC Hand Inter Lagos and Ikorodu City Defeats

Inter Lagos and Ikorodu City suffered defeats on Matchday 4 of the Ogunjobi Gold Cup pre-season competition at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.

Quick facts

  • Grassrunners FC beat Inter Lagos 2-0 and moved top with 10 points.
  • Abakaliki FC defeated Ikorodu City 2-0 to climb into second on nine points.
  • Doma United recorded a 3-1 victory over Dokkal Khairu FC.
  • Stormers SC and Sunshine Stars played out a 1-1 draw.

Grassrunners settled their contest with Inter Lagos inside the opening 28 minutes. Ajibola Emmanuel capitalised on an error in the defence before Ubi Johnson fired in a well-placed second goal, sending Grassrunners to the summit.

Ikorodu City were left to rue their failure to turn sustained pressure into a decisive advantage against Abakaliki FC. The Lagos side held 53% possession but could not convert that control into goals.

Moses Amanekwu broke the deadlock four minutes after the half-hour mark, giving Abakaliki, known as De Rice Boys, their opening goal.

Abakaliki protected the advantage and struck again in the 88th minute. A weak Ikorodu clearance fell to Chimaobi Metumareobi, who finished with a half-volley from inside the penalty area. The result lifted Abakaliki into second place with nine points.

Doma United claimed their first win of the tournament after the Savannah Tigers overcame newly promoted NNL club Dokkal Khairu FC of Ile-Ife by a 3-1 scoreline. Haruna Abubakar opened the scoring in the seventh minute, Bitrius Philemon added another in the 38th, and Usman Nasiba completed the victory five minutes from full time.

The day’s opening fixture saw Stormers SC and Sunshine Stars share the points in a 1-1 draw. Both goals came before the interval.

Play will pause tomorrow, with the schedule making provision for a rest day.
