Grassrunners Rally to Beat Doma United in Gold Cup Opener

Doma United began their Gold Cup pre-season campaign with a 2-1 defeat by Grassrunners FC at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, despite taking the lead inside the opening two minutes.

The contest changed sharply after the interval. Doma United controlled the opening half and exploited defensive errors from Grassrunners, with Fantami Yusuf finishing to put them ahead. That advantage remained intact at the break.

Grassrunners found a way back in the 73rd minute when Adeola Fadel rose to head home a set-piece from close range.

The pressure then increased for Savannah Tigers after Elumon Christian received a red card. Grassrunners took advantage in stoppage time, Musa Lasisi scoring late to complete the comeback and claim the win.

The tournament’s first match was also an entertaining four-goal encounter involving Stormers SC and Dokkal Khairu.

Dokkal Khairu struck first in the eighth minute through Yusuff Sulaiman, but Stormers quickly restored parity with Isa Obajumo on target. Adewale Ademola then put Stormers 2-1 up shortly before half-time.

Stormers’ defensive lapse proved decisive late on, as Dokkal Khairu were awarded a penalty. Adeosun Dauda kept his composure from the spot to make it 2-2.
