Calls for Nigerian Football Federation president Ibrahim Gusau to resign have intensified after the Super Falcons failed to reach the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
Supporters demand change
The backlash spread across social media within hours of South Africa eliminating Nigeria, with fans describing the latest setback as the breaking point after a series of disappointing results.
- @SarkinFoto said Gusau should submit his resignation before morning rather than issue an apology.
- Ben Marke argued that, in a properly functioning society, the NFF chief would step down and apologize for having wasted supporters’ time.
- @Weirdmaskman NG questioned why Gusau remained in office, saying a responsible leader would recognize the situation and leave while still able to do so.
- @Martins7906202 went further, saying Gusau should face imprisonment instead of merely resigning.
- In a Facebook post, Olatunji Balogun said FIFA should impose a ban on Nigeria now because, in his view, Gusau must leave.
A double World Cup absence
The anger has been driven by Nigeria’s recent record. The men’s team missed a second consecutive World Cup cycle after DR Congo defeated the Super Eagles on penalties in November 2025. With the women’s side also eliminated, Nigeria will be absent from both the men’s and women’s tournaments in the same period for the first time.
Before the decisive match against South Africa in Morocco, Gusau defended the federation’s planning. He pointed to friendly fixtures against Cameroon in November and March, as well as a proposed meeting with Senegal.
He said the Super Falcons were preparing for an African competition and that supporters should not expect the federation to arrange matches against European teams such as Norway or Sweden. Gusau added that playing African opponents was more practical because of the logistical demands and expense involved.
Gusau plans another term
Despite the mounting criticism, Gusau is preparing to contest the NFF presidency for a second term. The federation’s elective congress will now take place on 27 September in Lafia, after being shifted from 26 September because the Super Eagles are scheduled to face Madagascar on 25 September.
