Hamburg have brought Nigeria striker Terem Moffi to the club from Nice on a permanent deal, giving him the No. 9 shirt as they return to Bundesliga football.
Hamburg complete Moffi signing
Kathleen Krüger, Hamburg’s board member for sport, described the 27-year-old forward as a strong match for the club’s philosophy.
She said Moffi would provide more options and variety in the central striking role while raising the team’s overall quality. Krüger also highlighted the experience he has gained with Nigeria, which Hamburg expect him to share with their younger squad members.
Sporting director Claus Costa pointed to Moffi’s power, aggression and demanding playing style. He believes the striker can threaten space, challenge defenders inside the penalty area and protect the ball while facing away from goal — attributes Hamburg consider valuable in the physically intense Bundesliga.
Moffi has agreed terms through 2029. His departure brings an end to more than three years with Nice, although he also spent the second half of last season on loan at Porto, making 15 appearances in every competition.
Career record and European experience
- Moffi joined Nice from Lorient in January 2023. He scored 24 times in 72 matches for the French club.
- Before that transfer, he had found the net 35 times across 90 games for Lorient.
- During his temporary spell with Porto, he recorded two goals in 15 appearances.
- Across his time with Nice and Porto last season, he featured in seven Europa League matches.
- He scored in the opening leg of Porto’s 4-1 aggregate victory against VfB Stuttgart in the round of 16.
- At international level, Moffi has six goals from 23 appearances for Nigeria.
His move addresses some of the attacking void created by Robert Glatzel’s transfer to Wolfsburg in June. Glatzel had spent five seasons as a major scorer and dressing-room leader for Hamburg.
Moffi is the club’s seventh new addition during the summer window. He will work alongside Zambia forward Patson Daka, who arrived as a free agent in July, giving head coach Merlin Polzin two further attacking choices.
Daka provides speed and clever movement, while Moffi gives Hamburg a more imposing target who can fend off defenders, connect play with the midfield and pull opposing central defenders away from their positions.
Moffi excited by Hamburg’s history
The new signing said Hamburg’s reputation remained powerful despite the club’s recent years in Germany’s second tier.
He explained that his father instantly recognised the name when told about Hamburg’s interest and reacted with great excitement. Moffi said that response underlined the club’s worldwide standing, made the move especially meaningful and left him delighted to become part of Hamburg’s history.
Hamburg played away to Verl in the opening round of the DFB Cup last night. Their Bundesliga campaign will then begin on the road against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday evening.
