Kelechi Iheanacho kept up his remarkable goalscoring form on Sunday, but his late equaliser could not prevent Bursaspor from suffering a 2-1 home defeat to Mardin 1969 Spor after a stoppage-time winner.
Late drama denies Bursaspor
The visitors struck first in the 21st minute through Tonio Teklic and protected their narrow advantage for most of the contest.
- Iheanacho levelled the match in the 81st minute with a strike from distance.
- Zdravko Dimitrov restored Mardin 1969 Spor’s lead in the fourth minute of added time.
- Mardin midfielder Baba Alhassan was dismissed later in stoppage time.
The late concession meant Bursaspor came away empty-handed despite Iheanacho’s intervention in the closing stages.
Iheanacho extends extraordinary scoring streak
The Super Eagles forward has made a major impact since arriving at Bursaspor, registering 12 league goals and two assists in only nine appearances.
His goal against Mardin reportedly took his league scoring run to nine consecutive matches. He has also found the net in 10 straight fixtures for club and country, a sequence that includes Nigeria’s recent friendly meeting with Russia.
Coach praises striker’s contribution
Bursaspor manager Mustafa Er said the club had put considerable work into securing Iheanacho’s transfer, despite strong interest from elsewhere.
- “We brought Iheanacho in because we wanted him to score goals,” Er said. “We worked extremely hard to complete the deal, and we must also thank the management.”
- “There was huge interest in him. The stature of this club was very significant in his decision to join us, and we are receiving the contribution we expected.”
Strong individual numbers despite defeat
Iheanacho received an 8.3 SofaScore rating for his display, underlining his influence even though Bursaspor were beaten.
- Seven shots attempted, with four hitting the target.
- 18 successful passes from 23 attempts.
- Four duels won out of seven contested.
Bursaspor stay on 19 points following the defeat and will travel to face Muğlaspor on Thursday, October 15.
