Ilorin Set to Welcome 100 Golfers for 2026 Kwara Open

Ilorin Golf Club will host around 100 players from more than 15 clubs nationwide when the 2026 Kwara Open Golf Championship takes place in the Kwara State capital on October 10 and 11.

The Kwara Open is regarded as one of the leading amateur events on the state’s golf calendar. It has also developed into a notable sports-tourism occasion, bringing golfers and visitors from different parts of Nigeria to Ilorin.

Quick facts

  • The 2026 Kwara Open Golf Championship will be staged on October 10–11.
  • About 100 golfers representing over 15 Nigerian clubs are expected.
  • The field will include men’s, ladies’ and veterans’ categories.
  • The event is backed by the Kwara State Government and corporate organisations.

The two-day tournament will offer competition across the men’s, ladies’ and veterans’ divisions, allowing players in several categories to contest the honours.

Over the years, the championship has provided a valuable test for Kwara’s leading golfers. Local players have used the competition to measure themselves against competitors from some of Nigeria’s more established clubs.

Ilorin Golf Club captain Luqman Owolewa said the event remains important for growing the sport and building stronger ties among golfers.

“The championship helps to develop golf in the state and gives golfers from around Nigeria, particularly neighbouring states, a chance to connect,” Owolewa said.

He added that the club’s welcoming environment and hospitality have been key factors in attracting participants and helping to sustain strong attendance through the years.

The arrival of players and accompanying guests is also expected to highlight Ilorin as a destination, while generating sports-tourism interest and commercial activity in and around the state capital.

Support from the Kwara State Government and several corporate bodies has continued to aid the development of golf within the state.

With a strong national entry, multiple competition classes and an opportunity for home golfers to make their mark, Ilorin is preparing for a busy weekend of competition, fellowship and hospitality.
