Nigerian football icon Jay-Jay Okocha has entered the long-running argument over whether Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo deserves recognition as the greatest player of all time.
The contest between the two superstars has fascinated supporters across the globe for more than a decade. Each has a passionate following convinced that their preferred player stands above all others in football history.
Okocha, himself renowned for extraordinary skill and creativity, acknowledged Ronaldo’s remarkable scoring record but placed Messi in a different category.
Appearing on The Obi One Podcast with John Obi Mikel and Chris McHardy, the former Super Eagles captain said Ronaldo was a “special player” but primarily viewed him as a goalscorer. Okocha added that Ronaldo could score “10 million goals”, while comparing his role to that of Erling Haaland, whom he also described as a striker focused on finding the net.
Okocha then argued that Messi possesses a more instinctive footballing gift. He said the Argentine was “on another planet”, describing him as an artist who was born to play the game and would become ill without it. In Okocha’s view, Messi’s genius makes him impossible to overlook in the debate.
