Six clubs set for Jos tournament
Enugu-based Rangers International and Port Harcourt side Rivers United, both Champions League participants, will be joined by Confederation Cup representatives Shooting Stars of Ibadan and Maiduguri club El-Kanemi Warriors.
Hosts Plateau United and Mighty Jets will make up the remaining two places in the tournament, which will run for one week after its opening on Tuesday, August 18.
The event is intended to give all six teams competitive preparation for the forthcoming season. Its importance is particularly significant for the four clubs facing continental football, as they seek to improve their sharpness before their CAF campaigns begin.
Plateau FA welcomes hosting role
Plateau State Football Association chairman Hon. (Dr.) Prince Suleiman Yahaya Kwande praised Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for providing strong backing and favourable conditions for sport in the state.
Kwande said the governor’s continued support had helped football and other sporting activities develop in Plateau State, adding that the association remained deeply grateful for his commitment.
He said staging the NPFL Super 6 was another indication that Plateau State was strengthening its standing as one of Nigeria’s important football centres and a destination capable of hosting high-level sporting activities.
The association chairman appealed to football fans, youth groups, sports lovers and residents across the state to come out for the matches and encourage the competing teams.
The tournament is being delivered by the Plateau State Football Association in partnership with the Plateau State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
Beyond benefiting the four clubs with confirmed continental fixtures, the championship is expected to give Plateau United and Mighty Jets important preparation should either side earn a place in next season’s continental competitions.
