Golf event supporting cancer care
The one-day tournament will tee off simultaneously at 8am, before participants move on to a poolside lunch, an awareness session on cancer, the presentation of prizes and the closing awards ceremony.
The competition forms part of the club’s corporate social responsibility programme, designed to raise money for cancer screening, earlier diagnosis and treatment support for people in underserved areas.
Working with the St. Cyril Cancer Treatment Foundation, the Swing Against Cancer initiative provides free breast and cervical cancer checks for women from disadvantaged communities. It also offers support to cancer patients who do not have the financial means to pay for treatment.
In April 2026, the programme extended its outreach through an accessible cancer education and screening exercise for people with disabilities in Surulere, Lagos.
During the last three years, the campaign has also backed the Alima Atta Oncology Centre, Run for Cure Africa and Greenforth Medic, contributing to their treatment, awareness and early-detection work.
Fundraising record and calls for further backing
The club said SWAGc has collected more than N43 million since 2023. Its fundraising total was N11.6 million in 2023, followed by N15.5 million in 2024 and N16.5 million in 2025.
Money for the 2026 edition will come from personal and corporate sponsors, commercial partnerships and a charity raffle. Every naira raised through the raffle will be committed to the cancer initiative.
Lagos Golfers Club captain Fatumata Soukouna Coker said the tournament gives the club a chance to link its sporting activity with a wider community cause.
“After 14 years, our Year-End event is still the day we are most proud of because it brings golf and purpose together. Every shot played on November 28 is a shot against cancer,” Coker said.
She thanked the club’s members, sponsors and partners for keeping the project active, while urging additional organisations to join the effort.
Club trustee Hector Okposo said SWAGc is centred on screening, swift diagnosis and helping people unable to meet the cost of cancer care.
“Cancer can be beaten when it is detected soon enough. This is why SWAGc directs its resources towards screening, early diagnosis and helping patients who cannot afford treatment,” Okposo said.
He added that the campaign’s title represents the club’s conviction that collective effort can make a meaningful difference in the fight against cancer.
