Liverpool recovered from a first-half deficit to claim victory over nine-man Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium after taking control following the interval.
Brentford’s hopes were badly damaged in stoppage time before the break when Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off. Referee John Brooks ruled that the midfielder had made a “headbutting action” towards Liverpool defender Jeremy Jacquet.
Keith Andrews’ team had been in a strong position moments earlier, with Keane Lewis-Potter producing an excellent header in the 44th minute to put the hosts ahead. Brentford had looked comfortable at 1-0, but Yarmoliuk’s dismissal changed the contest and Liverpool exploited their extra player after half-time to complete the turnaround.
