Ademola Lookman is poised to meet Liverpool for the first time since moving to Atletico Madrid, as Diego Simeone’s team begin their 2026/27 Champions League journey with a 21:00 CEST visit to Anfield tonight.
The Nigeria international joined Atletico from Atalanta in February 2026 and became the first Nigerian to represent the club’s senior side. Lookman quickly established himself in Simeone’s forward line, scoring the decisive goal against Barcelona in Atletico’s Champions League quarter-final success and netting a penalty during last season’s LaLiga victory over Osasuna, alongside several other contributions in his first campaign. His appearance in Merseyside on Wednesday will be his first competitive match against Liverpool since relocating to Madrid.
Atletico arrive after suffering a 3-0 loss away to Athletic Club at San Mames in their most recent league fixture. The Madrid club have faced Liverpool at Anfield on several occasions in recent years, including a league-phase encounter in last season’s Champions League. Liverpool prevailed 3-2 on that occasion thanks to Virgil van Dijk’s injury-time strike, despite Alex Baena scoring twice for Atletico. Lookman had not yet joined the Spanish side when that game took place.
Across nine previous competitive meetings, Atletico have recorded three victories, while Liverpool have won four and the other two matches ended level.
Liverpool remain undefeated in the Premier League this term after a 2-0 away triumph over Ipswich, with Alexander Isak scoring both goals. That victory put Arne Slot’s team sixth in the standings on five points from their opening three matches.
