Bayelsa United coach Abdul Maikaba has set an immediate objective for his tenure: lead the Prosperity Boys back to the Nigeria Premier Football League at the first opportunity.
Maikaba took charge following the club’s relegation from Nigeria’s top division and has agreed to a one-year deal. His stated aim is to secure promotion at the conclusion of the 2026/27 Nigeria National League season.
After Bayelsa United defeated De Go-Pro FC of Sapele in a pre-season match, the former Kano Pillars, Enyimba and Plateau United manager said the coaching staff was still evaluating the players before finalising a promotion-challenging squad.
Maikaba was pleased with the team’s performance but stressed that the current group remains under assessment because recruitment is still ongoing. Players capable of strengthening the side will be retained, while those unable to make a positive contribution will be released.
More than 60 footballers are presently in camp, although Maikaba plans to cut that figure to a maximum squad of 35 before the campaign begins. He said competitive fixtures and focused training sessions would help the staff identify the strongest candidates.
“We have over 60 players with us, and we are steadily reducing the number to our limit of 35,” Maikaba said. “Through good matches and the right preparation, we will select the best players. My one-year contract is designed for us to complete this task within one season.”
Bayelsa United have been placed in Conference B of the NNL, where they will face Beyond Limits FA, Solution FC, Akwa United, Smart City FC, Right-2-Win FC, Dokka Khairu FC, Abakaliki FC and Ekiti United.
Although the group contains several capable opponents, Maikaba said his side would not attempt to choose favourable fixtures or look for a shortcut. Bayelsa United, he insisted, are prepared to play whoever stands in their way, with promotion to the Premier League after one season remaining the goal.
The 2026/27 NNL campaign is due to get under way on October 31. The opening game will see Heartland FC welcome Crown FC of Ogbomosho to Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.
