Former Nigeria women’s international winger Stella Mbachu believes the Super Falcons can regain the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) crown, but has called on the squad to stay focused and treat the competition one fixture at a time.
During an appearance on The Super Falcons Show, the seven-time WAFCON champion said Nigeria possesses the quality, experience and winning mentality required to return to the top of African women’s football. However, she warned the players against thinking too far beyond their next match.
“The team must deal with each match as it arrives rather than looking ahead. Every game matters, and the right approach in each one will bring the desired results,” Mbachu said.
She pointed out that Nigeria’s record as Africa’s most successful women’s national side makes the Super Falcons a major target for every rival. Mbachu consequently encouraged the players to show respect to all opponents while retaining the belief and self-assurance that have long characterised the team.
The former winger also highlighted the squad’s mixture of seasoned performers and promising younger players, describing that combination as a major strength in Nigeria’s bid to win the trophy.
According to Mbachu, togetherness will be essential if the Falcons are to succeed, and she urged the players to keep working and competing for each other from the opening match to the final whistle.
“There is enough ability in this squad to become champions. The players must stay together, trust their own qualities and stand up for one another. Nigerians should keep supporting them, as the team will make the nation proud,” she added.
Mbachu further called on Nigerians to maintain their backing throughout the tournament, saying encouragement from home could motivate the players to perform at their highest level in pursuit of another continental title.
