The recipient of the 2026 Ballon d’Or will be revealed on October 26, and the World Cup final is expected to carry substantial weight when the final rankings are assessed.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi is currently regarded as the front-runner after steering his team to the tournament final. At 39 years old, he remains a central influence, and his impact in the semi-final added further force to his case.
Messi produced two assists in Argentina’s 2–1 win over England, a performance that underlined his ability to decide matches at the highest level. Across the competition, his overall showing has positioned him at the summit of the award race, with a 31.7% likelihood of lifting the Ballon d’Or.
Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has also emerged as a serious challenger, building momentum through standout displays for both club and country. England captain Harry Kane continues to hold a place in the discussion despite his team being eliminated in the semi-finals. His reputation for reliable finishing has remained intact throughout the tournament, and he played a central role in England’s World Cup run, with his individual performances still earning recognition.
At present, Kane’s probability of winning the award stands at 13.5%.
Rounding out the leading group is France forward Ousmane Dembele, who completes the top four contenders. Although he is viewed as an outside option, his pace and attacking output over the past year have kept him in the mix, with a 3.1% chance of winning the Ballon d’Or.
