Mourinho Begins Second Real Madrid Spell After Private Club Ceremony

Jose Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid had been in progress for weeks before the club formally confirmed it in a low-key ceremony at its training complex, marking a second spell filled with nostalgia, uncertainty and unresolved ambitions.

Mourinho’s second Madrid chapter

1. The Portuguese coach began working with the squad when pre-season opened on July 10. He then put pen to paper on a deal running through June 2029 at the Ciudad Real Madrid boardroom, with president Florentino Perez and honorary president Jose Martinez Pirri present.
2. For an institution usually associated with grand presentations, the deliberately quiet event was notable in itself.
3. Madrid enter the new LaLiga campaign having gone two successive seasons without winning a trophy. Perez, despite securing re-election, no longer commands the same unquestioned authority and is facing increasing pressure from supporters demanding immediate improvement.
4. Mourinho presented the move as more than another coaching appointment. He said the experience felt like “coming home” and explained that the emotion was greater than during his first arrival, when the achievement was reaching the summit of world football. This time, he said, the feeling was more personal and heartfelt.
5. He added that he had always regarded himself as part of the Madrid family and understood the significance of working for the club. In his view, serving Real Madrid means serving its supporters, a principle he believes everyone at the club must embrace.
6. Mourinho’s previous tenure lasted from 2010 until 2013. That turbulent period produced LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, while also bringing disputes and leaving a permanent mark on the club.
7. He has now returned after his time at Benfica, with Perez directing one of Madrid’s most ambitious recruitment drives in recent years. Yan Diomande, Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Carlos Espi have joined, while winger Vinicius Jr has received the long-term contract extension supporters had been waiting for.
8. The incoming players are expected to be unveiled separately and away from the public in the next few days, following the same private arrangement used for Mourinho’s confirmation.
9. The restrained presentation reflects Madrid’s desire to protect the team from outside distractions before Saturday’s LaLiga opener against Espanyol in Barcelona.
10. Mourinho insisted that his objective was not individual acclaim but the restoration of the club’s standards. He described the assignment as a mission and said he wanted to improve the players and staff while building an environment based on effort, accountability, ambition and the responsibility and privilege of representing Real Madrid.
11. The manager once branded “The Special One” returns under pressure to deliver. He has gone 11 years without a league title and four years without a trophy.
