Nathaniel Idowu Summer Camp Wraps Up After Four Weeks in Tolu

The Nathaniel Idowu Summer Camp 2026 ended at the weekend in a vibrant celebration at the New Maracana Sports Complex in Tolu.

More than 500 children and 200 parents attended the closing event after four weeks of structured learning, discipline and discovery at the facility.

The camp began in early August with some participants taking cautious first steps and struggling to find their rhythm. By the final day, they were producing assured dribbles, powerful runs and confidently taken goals, prompting loud celebrations. The pitch became their showcase, while proud parents lined the touchlines and witnessed growth in both ability and character.

Peakline Sports World Ltd organised the programme under the direction of Director General McAnthony Anaelechukwu, with support from the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation.

The initiative extended beyond football instruction. Children received meals each day, medical personnel were available throughout the programme, and every participant was given transport money on the closing day to help them return home safely. Twenty certified coaches and seven temporary staff members maintained the camp’s standards, with mentorship and child safety treated as continuing priorities.

Chief Yemi Idowu, the Foundation’s founder, addressed the gathering and expressed his satisfaction with the outcome. “Our aim from the beginning was to use sport to give children in Ajegunle hope,” he said.

“Having 500 children here, with their parents standing behind them, shows that we are moving in the right direction. This will not be a single event. We are committed to developing talent from the grassroots.” The declaration was warmly received by the crowd.

The closing ceremony also featured financial support for parents, who were handed cash assistance. Idowu later visited the basketball section, where he observed young players working intensely through their training.

He promised that a new basketball court would be constructed at Maracana to provide the players with a permanent venue. “The commitment shown by our basketball children is clear, and they should have a court here that belongs to them. The Foundation will deliver it, allowing training to continue after the camp,” he said. With a smile, he added: “This is my own Owambe. While other people celebrate themselves, I choose to celebrate the children.”

Idowu views sport as a foundation for life rather than mere recreation. In his view, it develops mental sharpness, discipline and concentration, all of which benefit children in school and in their everyday activities. He also maintains that a footballer must first develop as an athlete, with quick reactions, proper nutrition, adequate recovery and high-intensity work central to long-term progress. His programmes are designed to continue beyond the initial excitement, strengthened by cooperation and the satisfaction of watching young people develop.

His broader plan includes an age-based talent pathway, with girls’ football receiving particular attention. Idowu wants hundreds of girls across Lagos to compete consistently, with some progressing to the national teams, while boys are prepared for opportunities within the national system. That objective was reflected in the Let Her Play initiative, which welcomed 32 new female players during the closing ceremony. The 30 girls who were already part of the training programme will continue working towards national recognition and represent the Foundation’s commitment to gender inclusion.

The conclusion brought mixed emotions. Some children cried tears of happiness while hugging their coaches and teammates, showing how strongly they had connected with a camp that had begun to feel like a second home. Despite the farewell, their development will continue.

Three hundred of the strongest performers were selected for weekend training sessions, ensuring the enthusiasm created in August remains alive.

The programme also received international backing. US-based Gear ’em Up, operated by Khadija and Marvelous, donated kits to the participants and added to the event’s spirit of collective support.

Parents praised the organisers, with one mother saying: “My daughter has never shown this level of confidence before. I am grateful to Peakline and the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation. From the meals and coaching to the transport support, every detail was covered.”

With free entry, daily meals, mentoring, continued training after the camp and the planned basketball court, Camp 2026 has raised the standard for grassroots youth development in Lagos.

For the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation and Peakline Sports World, the event represents the opening stage of a much longer project: identifying children early, developing them properly and creating a route towards success for young people in Lagos. Its purpose was summed up by the camp’s theme: “Empowering Young Minds Through Sport.”
