The 2026 Nathaniel Idowu U-16 Football League began on Saturday with 22 goals across five opening-round matches.
Quick facts
- Five fixtures were played on Matchday 1.
- The opening round produced 22 goals.
- The competition is a nine-week youth league.
Fast starts proved decisive on the first day. St Petersburg FA scored within 42 seconds against Fortune FA, while Divinely Blessed FA’s Ugwuokolie Chidalu found the net just six seconds into his team’s match.
Fortune FA later overturned the contest against St Petersburg, showing how valuable depth can be. Substitute Lateef Wasiu and Ibrahim Olaoye combined to change the direction of the game before Odesola Odunayo completed the victory.
That result offered an early lesson for coaches: teams able to rotate well and bring effective replacements into matches could have an advantage when games become closely contested.
Bright Stars Sports Academy delivered the day’s most emphatic result, beating Seraphic FC 5–1. Valentine Aniako scored four times, including a second-half hat-trick, underlining the impact of a forward who converts chances with consistency.
Clubs that fail to show similar precision in the penalty area could find it difficult to match opponents equipped with high-scoring attackers.
SC Heritage’s late recovery against Moore Wins FA provided another notable storyline. Jonathan Norbert struck twice in the closing stages, showing that newcomers can remain confident against more established opposition.
With young players combining energy and resolve, further late comebacks are likely as the league develops.
Ajegunle United SC and Young Eleven FA shared a 1–1 draw, reinforcing the importance of defensive structure. Both goals came from the penalty spot, while Ajegunle’s Kolawole Ayomide impressed with his calm work in defence.
Although attacking quality may dominate the competition, well-organised back lines could ultimately decide the title race.
The nine-week league returns for Matchday 2 on Sept. 12.
