The Nathaniel Idowu U-16 Football League resumes on Saturday for its second round of fixtures, while Taiwo Awoniyi’s bright start at Coventry City offers the Nigerian striker a possible route back into the Super Eagles.
Five Week 2 matches after goal-filled opener
Five games will be staged at two venues as the young teams return following an explosive opening weekend that produced 22 goals. The sides will aim to build on their first appearances, eliminate early errors and improve their positions in the standings.
The opening round delivered drama throughout. Fortune FA recovered from conceding to St. Petersburg FA only 42 seconds after kick-off, with substitutes Lateef Wasiu, Ibrahim Olaoye and Odesola Odunayo making decisive contributions after the interval. Divinely Blessed FA also made tournament history when Ugwuokolie Chidalu scored after just six seconds, the quickest goal of the competition, and they will now seek to convert that momentum into victory.
- SC Heritage displayed strong character in their first match, with Jonathan Norbert scoring twice late on to earn a draw against Moore Wins FA.
- Young Eleven FA produced a well-organised display but were unable to make their chances count in a 1-1 stalemate with Ajegunle United.
- Bright Star FA recorded the round’s biggest win, defeating Seraphic FA 5-1.
Bright Star test Atico, while Ajegunle seek revenge
Bright Star’s triumph was powered by Valentine Aniako, who scored four times, including a hat-trick after half-time. His outstanding display immediately placed him at the top of the Golden Boot standings. Atico Football Academy, making its competition debut, face a demanding introduction and will require a highly disciplined defensive performance to withstand Bright Star’s attacking threat.
Ajegunle United and Moore Wins FA will meet with both teams searching for their first win after drawing their opening fixtures. Ajegunle shared a 1-1 result with Young Eleven, while Moore Wins were held by SC Heritage. The contest carries an added edge because Moore Wins beat Ajegunle 3-1 in the tournament’s U-14 version. Ajegunle will therefore be seeking revenge in what could be the most intense encounter of Week 2.
St. Petersburg FA showed against Fortune that they can make a rapid start, finding the net inside the opening minute, but they could not protect their advantage. Their next challenge is against Seraphic FA, who will be determined to respond after suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to Bright Star. St. Petersburg will be targeting a more complete performance across the full 90 minutes.
Peakline Sports World Limited organises the league, with the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation serving as sponsor. The competition continues to give young players in Ajeromi-Ifelodun an important setting in which to develop, compete and showcase their ability.
Coventry opportunity could revive Awoniyi’s international hopes
Awoniyi’s transfer to Coventry City has provided the Nigerian forward with a fresh platform to rebuild his club career and potentially return to the Super Eagles picture.
He has made an encouraging start, scoring his first goal for Coventry in the club’s League Cup win over Plymouth. The striker needed only three minutes on the pitch after entering as a substitute to find the net.
Regular opportunities under manager Frank Lampard could be particularly important following a challenging spell in which sustained first-team football was difficult to secure. His return to competitive action has also renewed debate about a possible comeback for Nigeria.
Awoniyi has collected 10 senior international appearances but has not featured for the Super Eagles since 2023. A productive period with Coventry could restore his claims, provided he remains fit and recaptures his scoring touch.
Former footballer Clinton Morrison believes Awoniyi looks in better physical condition and is motivated to make a significant contribution.
The striker now has the opportunity to transform that renewed determination into goals, support Coventry’s fight to avoid Premier League relegation and place himself back on Nigeria’s radar.
