Matthias Jaissle secured his first Premier League win as Newcastle manager as Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa delivered a 2-0 victory at Tottenham, condemning Spurs to their second league defeat of the campaign.
Newcastle strike twice after the break
The meeting produced another goal, extending a notable run between the clubs: since the competition adopted the Premier League name in 1992, they had never played out a goalless league draw.
- Tottenham passed up a major opportunity before the interval when debutant Omar Marmoush, signed on loan from Manchester City, found himself unmarked at the side of the six-yard area but could only steer his side-footed effort wide.
- Newcastle went ahead in the 62nd minute. Nico Gonzalez, making his first appearance for the Magpies after his £52m transfer from Manchester City, launched the attack with an excellent diagonal ball to Amar Dedic, whose header sent Elanga through.
- Elanga, who had also scored in Newcastle’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Sunday, worked clear of former Magpies midfielder Sandro Tonali before turning and firing towards goal. His shot struck the post and went in.
- Ten minutes later, Newcastle added a second. Nick Woltemade headed a corner into Wissa’s path, allowing the striker to finish with an acrobatic hooked effort.
Tonali returns to face former club
Tonali lined up against Newcastle for the first time since leaving the club for Tottenham in a £100m summer transfer. The Italy international had spent three years on Tyneside before becoming Spurs’ record signing.
The visiting supporters repeatedly jeered Tonali throughout the contest. Their reaction intensified when he was replaced by Dominic Solanke with Tottenham trailing 2-0, as the Newcastle fans celebrated his departure from the field.
The result moves Newcastle into fourth place in the table. Tottenham, meanwhile, remain bottom and have yet to score a league goal this season.
