Newcastle United have reached an agreement with Manchester City over the signing of midfielder Nico Gonzalez in a package that could total £52 million. The proposed move would add further strength to Newcastle’s midfield ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.
Quick facts
- Initial transfer fee: £48 million
- Potential additional payments: £4 million
- Gonzalez joined Manchester City from Porto in January 2025
- The Spain international is 24 years old
The deal is understood to include £48 million upfront, followed by as much as £4 million in performance-related extras. Gonzalez must still complete a medical while Newcastle prepare the remaining steps needed to conclude the transfer.
The 24-year-old Spain international moved to City from Porto in January 2025. He has yet to secure a consistent place in the starting XI at the Etihad Stadium since making that switch.
Newcastle have identified midfield reinforcement as a priority and believe Gonzalez can bring technical quality, greater squad cover and strength to the department. His ability to operate in different midfield roles should also expand manager Eddie Howe’s tactical choices.
Completion remains dependent on the medical examination and the final contractual procedures. Should everything be approved, the move would rank among Newcastle’s most expensive deals of the summer, with the full value rising to £52 million.
