NFF Orders Super Falcons Technical Team to Step Aside Immediately

The Nigeria Football Federation’s Executive Committee has ordered the Super Falcons’ technical team to leave their positions with immediate effect. The decision was announced on the federation’s official social media channels on Monday evening.

In its statement, the NFF said the Executive Committee had instructed the members of the technical crew of the @NGSuper_Falcons to step aside immediately.

The move comes after Nigeria’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and its subsequent failure to reach the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Super Falcons were eliminated from the WAFCON in the quarter-finals following a 1-0 defeat by Cameroon, before South Africa beat them 2-1 in the World Cup play-off.

That result ended Nigeria’s hopes of appearing at Brazil 2027 and means the country will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the competition was launched in 1991. The failure is one of the most damaging episodes in the history of Nigerian women’s football and has led to growing demands for a thorough examination of the team’s tactics, squad choices, player handling and wider technical leadership.

The NFF must now establish a new course for the Super Falcons before their next significant challenge, the qualification campaign for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Nigeria are due to open that campaign against Comoros in October 2026.

NFF launches investigation into recent setbacks

In a related move, NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau yesterday inaugurated the Fact-finding Committee on Nigeria Football Setbacks and urged its members to conduct their work with honesty and commitment.

The federation created the panel last Friday to examine the Super Falcons’ failure to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Gusau instructed the committee to establish both the immediate and underlying reasons for Nigeria’s recent struggles in international football, placing particular emphasis on the Falcons’ World Cup elimination. He set a two-week deadline for the submission of its findings.

Committee chairman Fanny Ikhayere Amun said the panel would hear from people linked to the matters under investigation and would also receive memoranda from members of the public.

The committee includes former Super Falcons captain Desire Oparanozie, former Super Eagles captain Mutiu Adepoju, Nigeria Football Coaches Association president Ladan Bosso and former FIFA referee Dr Alex Mana. Nasiru Jibril, a deputy director in the NFF Technical Department, will serve as secretary.

NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and Philip Shaibu, the Director-General of the National Institute for Sports, attended the inauguration in Abuja alongside other directors of the federation.
