
Nigeria secured the bronze medal in the IHF Women’s Nations Trophy Africa Zone III after defeating hosts Burkina Faso 31-23 in Ouagadougou.
Michael Taangahar’s team made the stronger start in Sunday’s third-place play-off, taking a 16-11 lead into the interval at the Palais des Sports de Ouaga 2000.
The Nigerians continued to dictate the contest in the second half, scoring 15 more times as Burkina Faso managed 12 goals, resulting in an eight-goal win.
Wuraola Nuhu was Nigeria’s standout scorer with 11 goals and received the award for Most Valuable Player of the match.
Kinnan Haruna added five goals, while Saaoloo Daina struck four times. Grace Ahamfefula and Lucy Onyekwere each scored three, Mercy Audu and Sadiya Abubakar contributed two apiece, and Balikisu Muhammad rounded off the scoring with one.
The result gave Nigeria a winning finish to the tournament after their hopes of reaching the final had ended.
Benin Republic claimed the title with a 29-28 triumph against Côte d’Ivoire in the final, a result that also earned them qualification for the 2026 CAHB African Women’s Handball Championship.
