Nigeria Flamingos Urged to Be Clinical Against Mexico in U-17 World Cup Clash

Nigeria’s Flamingos have been told to show a clinical edge when they meet Mexico in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup last 16 in Morocco, with head coach Akeem Busari and Nigeria Football Federation acting general secretary Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme both demanding full concentration for the knockout test.

Quick facts

  • Nigeria play Mexico for a quarter-final place today.
  • The match starts at 3pm local time in Morocco, which is 4pm in Nigeria.
  • Both Oluebube Umejiaku and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi have scored twice at the tournament.
  • The Flamingos beat Mexico 3-0 in the 2014 group phase in Costa Rica.

Busari said Mexico are a strong opponent, but believes Nigeria’s ability to convert opportunities will be decisive in the contest.

“Making the most of our chances is among the key areas for us,” Busari said. “Every side has its own strengths and level of effectiveness. Mexico are a very good team, and there is mutual respect between us. At this point, every remaining team can win the trophy.”

The Flamingos coach said his staff have prepared a specific strategy, although he declined to give details before the game. His focus has instead been on ensuring the players approach the fixture with the right mindset.

“We have our own principles, but this is not the time to reveal them,” Busari said. “We are asking the players to show a strong mentality, be ready and take the correct approach.”

He expects a tightly balanced match between teams with comparable playing characteristics. Busari said the North American side combine attacking structure with individual quality, in a style he likened to the approach often seen in West African football.

“They play an attractive game, with tactical forwards and individual ability, much as we do in the West,” he said. “It could be a match involving similar styles, although our methods may be different.”

Ikpeme delivered a similar message when he attended the squad’s Wednesday afternoon training session in Rabat. He urged the players not to dwell on their victory against Korea DPR.

Instead, he called on the team to remain determined and focused as their World Cup run enters the knockout stage, stressing the scale of the assignment awaiting them against Mexico.

Busari had already instructed his players to put their group victories over Puerto Rico and reigning champions Korea DPR behind them. He wants the squad prepared for the greater pressure and intensity of elimination football.

The coach has all 21 members of his squad available for selection. Goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho has been in good form, while Azeezat Oduntan, Ohunene Sunday, Esther Stephen and Kanyinsola Rodiat Yusuf are among the defenders expected to feature from the start.

Favour Nkwocha, Tosin Rafiu and Mary Dunstan could again form part of the midfield. Nkwocha and Rafiu were members of the Falconets squad at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland last month.

Umejiaku and Adegbuyi, each on two goals in Morocco, may lead the attack. Precious Oscar is also in contention, as is captain Harmony Chidi, who began Friday’s win over the world champions among the substitutes.

Nigeria were placed in Group B with Korea DPR, Puerto Rico and Poland. Mexico competed in Group F alongside Spain, Australia and Chile, and reached the finals after topping their group in the last round of CONCACAF qualifying.

The two nations previously faced each other in the group stage of the 2014 edition in Costa Rica. Nigeria won 3-0 at Estadio Nacional in San José on March 23, 2014, with Rasheedat Ajibade, Uchenna Kanu and Aminat Yakubu scoring.

The Round of 16 format was added when the competition grew from 16 to 24 teams in 2025, making this only the second edition to include that stage. This tournament is also the third FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup hosted on African soil.
