Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress face Cameroon again on Thursday, this time in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIBA U-18 Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The high-stakes rematch gives Nigeria an immediate opportunity to settle the group-stage result, when Cameroon prevailed 75-74 after overtime. Victory would send the Junior D’Tigress into the semi-finals and secure their place at the 2027 FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup.
Nigeria held a 43-39 advantage at the interval in that first encounter, but their attack faded badly after half-time. They managed only nine points during the third quarter, allowing Cameroon to take control of the contest.
The rebounding battle was another decisive factor. Cameroon collected 61 rebounds to Nigeria’s 42, including 22 at the offensive end, exposing an area the Nigerian side must address in the rematch.
Defensively, however, the Junior D’Tigress produced an impressive display. Their pressure generated 46 Cameroonian turnovers, while Nigeria also finished with 29 steals.
For Nigeria to advance, they will need to compete more effectively under the basket, prevent another damaging spell of low scoring in the third quarter and sustain their defensive intensity. Greater offensive input from players beyond the main scorers will also be required.
Zainab Adelaja and Nigeria’s other interior players are expected to make a stronger impact on the glass. Edore Pela and Oluwatobiloba Owolabi, both among Nigeria’s leading scorers in the earlier meeting, will again be central to the team’s attacking plans.
The quarter-final is due to begin at 4:30pm WAT on Thursday, with FIBA’s digital channels, including YouTube, expected to provide coverage.
Only a single point separated the teams in their previous clash, setting the stage for another tense battle. This time, though, the losing side will have no chance to rely on overtime to extend its tournament run.
