Nigeria’s women have reached the semi-finals of the 2026 African U18 Beach Volleyball Development Cup in Senegal after completing an unbeaten group-stage campaign.
Quick facts
- Nigeria defeated Mozambique 2-0.
- Set scores: 21-15, 21-17.
- The victory sent Nigeria into the last four.
The Nigerian teenagers secured the result yesterday with a composed performance, overcoming Mozambique in straight sets, 21-15, 21-17.
Coach John Iwerima applauded the side’s tactical control and wider display, saying the players’ progress at the competition has been encouraging.
“The girls have shown a high standard of tactical play. They are only starting out, and I expect them to keep improving as the tournament continues,” said the former international.
Iwerima said Nigeria’s involvement is about more than chasing the trophy. The primary objective, he explained, is to give the young athletes international exposure and help them prepare for greater challenges ahead.
“Our main task is to expose these players and get them ready for the major responsibilities in front of them. This tournament offers an important setting for development and experience,” he said.
Even so, the coach feels that lifting the title could deliver an extra lift to both the players and the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF).
“Winning the competition would add to the profile of the players as well as that of the Federation,” Iwerima said.
