Nigeria Stripped of African and U20 Relay Records Over Illegal Spikes

Nigeria have lost both their African and national under-20 mixed 4x100m relay records after being disqualified at the World Athletics U-20 Championships over the use of non-approved spikes.

Nigeria’s record erased after relay disqualification

The Nigerian team finished fourth in the Eugene, Oregon, final in 41.77 seconds. The quartet was made up of Tejiri Godwin, Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo, Perfect Faye and Miracle Ezechukwu.

The mark was initially recognised as an African under-20 record and a Nigerian under-20 record. Those records were subsequently withdrawn after officials determined that Faye had competed in spikes absent from the approved World Athletics equipment list.

Strong finish could not prevent penalty

The ruling was issued soon after the final, where Ezechukwu delivered a powerful 9.89-second anchor leg. Her effort lifted Nigeria from seventh position to fourth by the finish, but the later equipment violation led to the quartet’s disqualification.

Italy takes title with world junior best

Italy claimed the gold medal in a world under-20 record of 41.21 seconds. Great Britain secured silver in 41.38, while the United States completed the podium in 41.39.

As a result of Nigeria’s disqualification, the team no longer holds either the continental junior record or the Nigerian junior record in the mixed 4x100m relay.
