Defending champions Nigeria delivered a commanding attacking display at Stade Moulay Hassan on Wednesday evening, defeating Egypt 6–2 and booking a WAFCON 2026 quarter-final against Cameroon.
Nigeria seize control before half-time
The Super Falcons made the stronger start and moved ahead in the 21st minute. After a VAR review identified a handball, Asisat Oshoala stepped up and calmly converted the resulting penalty.
Nigeria extended their lead during added time at the end of the first half. Substitute Gift Monday completed a cleverly worked short-corner move, with Toni Payne and Rinsola Babajide combining to create the opening. Egypt responded soon afterwards, reducing the deficit to 2–1 before the interval.
Six-goal display seals emphatic victory
The 10-time champions continued to dictate the match after the restart and restored their two-goal advantage in the 57th minute. Uchenna Kanu, introduced from the bench, finished with a sharp effort from her left foot.
Two further penalties awarded following VAR interventions then put the result beyond doubt:
- Christy Ucheibe converted in the 80th minute.
- Captain Rasheedat Ajibade scored from the spot eight minutes later.
The final highlight arrived deep into stoppage time. Gift Monday and Ajibade combined to cut open Egypt’s defence before setting up Joy Omewa, who finished from close range. The goal was Omewa’s first at the WAFCON and completed Nigeria’s explosive six-goal performance.
Cameroon await in the quarter-finals
With the victory secured, the Super Falcons will now shift their attention to the knockout phase. Their next assignment is a quarter-final meeting with familiar opponents Cameroon.
