Digital engagement drives record reach
The figures reflect a planned move away from a television-only model, with greater emphasis placed on interactive features, market-specific storytelling and content created with digital influencers.
Nigeria represented 21.2 per cent of the 175,615 people who registered for the interactive SuperSport Predictor. Only South Africa, with 29.5 per cent, had a larger share. Across the platform, users made 3.81 million predictions during 257,299 game sessions, and 83.1 per cent of challenges were completed.
Content tailored to local audiences was a major factor in encouraging natural online participation. Pidgin-language commentary generated more social media discussion than any other commentary format and drew favourable responses to the teams involved.
The #EverythingCanWait initiative accounted for most of the 19.1 billion social media views. SuperSport produced 817 videos for YouTube and TikTok, with those two platforms responsible for 84 per cent of the broadcaster’s 677 million video views. The campaign also recorded 54.4 million engagements and lifted the network’s paid subscriber total to 11.4 million.
Website and streaming performance
The Pan-African creator partner initiative added a further 18.1 million views and 8.8 million engagements, posting an average engagement rate of 5 per cent.
SuperSport.com welcomed 10.1 million visitors during the competition. More than six million football video views were generated on the site, which also sent 417,591 users directly to DStv’s over-the-top streaming service.
The FIFA World Cup Hub on DStv Stream registered six million visits in total, with simultaneous streaming audiences reaching a high of 933,000.
