Nigeria’s Flamingos stand one victory away from the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final in Morocco, with Brazil awaiting them in a high-stakes semi-final.
Flamingos recover from difficult start
The last-four meeting is expected to be an absorbing contest between two sides that have repeatedly displayed determination under pressure. Nigeria have travelled a demanding route in Morocco, with Hakeem Busari’s squad forced to respond after an early setback.
- The Flamingos began the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Poland, putting immediate pressure on their remaining group matches.
- They bounced back by defeating Puerto Rico 2-0.
- Nigeria then produced a defining 3-1 victory over reigning champions North Korea, sealing a Round of 16 place and strengthening the team’s confidence.
- A 2-1 win against Mexico followed in the last 16.
The quarter-final against Venezuela demanded another show of composure. Nigeria created opportunities but initially could not find a breakthrough, with extra time appearing increasingly likely. Azeezat Oduntan finally settled the tie in the 89th minute, converting a penalty to send the Flamingos into the semi-finals.
Key players at both ends
Brazil will bring significant attacking threat, led by Greise Kelly. The Brazilian forward has made a major impact in Morocco, scoring three goals and setting up five more.
Nigeria, meanwhile, will again rely on goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho. Her important saves during the knockout rounds have played a central role in the Flamingos’ run to the final four.
- Brazil’s main attacking figure: Greise Kelly, with three goals and five assists.
- Nigeria’s defensive standout: goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho, whose interventions have helped carry the side through the elimination rounds.
Busari targets another landmark result
Busari said reaching the semi-finals had fulfilled a personal ambition, but stressed that Nigeria are determined to produce another major performance.
“Making the semi-finals is a dream fulfilled for me and a huge achievement,” Busari said. “I am excited about what is ahead because I want to make my country proud. We want to give everything in the next game and show everybody what we are capable of.”
The Flamingos are pleased with their progress, although they understand that Brazil represent another formidable challenge because of their attacking quality and experience at this point in the competition. Nigeria have nevertheless earned their place in the semi-finals with four successive wins, while their displays have become stronger from match to match.
