Deborah Abiodun and Chiamaka Nnadozie say Nigeria are prepared for Wednesday’s decisive Group C meeting with Egypt at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, with a victory required to keep their campaign alive.
The Super Falcons, who have won the African title 10 times, restored momentum by edging Zambia 1-0 after losing their opening match to Malawi. Asisat Oshoala’s early goal proved decisive, even though Nigeria spent a significant portion of the contest with 10 players after Oluwatosin Demehin was sent off before half-time.
Abiodun highlighted the squad’s determination ahead of the Egypt clash, but stressed that the team must remain completely focused because three points are vital for qualification for the quarter-finals.
“It was a difficult battle, particularly because the red card came in the first half,” the midfielder said. “Playing the second period a player short tested us enormously. Every player had to work harder, win additional tackles and cover more distance. Our togetherness helped us through, but we now have to prepare properly for Egypt.”
She also used her comments to promote the development of women’s football, expressing gratitude to the supporters and urging broadcasters to provide the sport with greater exposure.
“We are grateful to all the fans who stood behind us. We would also like to see improved television coverage, because women’s football is growing and merits greater visibility,” Abiodun added.
Nnadozie, meanwhile, said the criticism directed at Nigeria after the defeat by Malawi had helped sharpen the team’s resolve rather than weaken it.
“The criticism was not completely negative because it came from people who wanted us to improve. It demonstrated how deeply our supporters care,” the goalkeeper said. “We are the Super Falcons and have lifted the African trophy 10 times. We ask Nigerians to continue believing in us, praying for us and supporting us. The win against Zambia belonged to our fans.”
With the knockout stage at stake, Nnadozie said Nigeria are seeking not merely a victory but also a strong goal difference against Egypt to make their progress to the last eight more secure.
“Our attention is on winning again and finding more goals against Egypt so that we can strengthen our hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals,” said the Paris FC goalkeeper.
Nigeria go into Wednesday’s fixture aware that a commanding performance is needed against Egypt if they are to continue pursuing an 11th continental championship.
