Nigeria’s Junior Female YellowGreens will pursue a third straight victory in the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier Division 1 when they meet hosts Tanzania today at 12:00 WAT.
Nigeria’s route to the top
- Nigeria opened their Group A campaign against Uganda, who made 59 for seven after choosing to bat first. Chisom Okpe returned figures of two wickets for four runs, while Peace Usen claimed two for 12 during a controlled bowling effort.
- Uganda’s Tino Sarah then threatened to turn the match with five wickets for 13 runs, putting pressure on Nigeria’s chase. However, Omosigho Eguakun’s 24 and Christabel Chukwuonye’s 13 helped the YellowGreens recover and reach 60 for six in 13.1 overs for a four-wicket success.
- Nigeria produced a far more dominant display against Malawi on Match Day 2. After being sent in, they made 152 for seven, with Shola Adekunle top-scoring with 32 from 27 deliveries. Eguakun and Beauty Oguai each added 26, while captain Chukwuonye contributed a brisk 20 from 12 balls.
- The bowlers then dismissed Malawi for 58 in 18.3 overs. Jennifer Godwin led the attack with four wickets for five runs, and Adekunle completed an outstanding all-round performance by taking two for four. She was named Player of the Match.
Those results have placed Nigeria first in Group A with four points and a net run rate of 3.467. Victory over Tanzania would give them a strong advantage before the competition reaches its later stages.
The wider objective is to secure passage to the next stage of the global qualification route, making the meeting with the home side another important step towards that goal.
