The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) says the inaugural Michael Opeyemi Bamidele National Taekwondo Championship will feature brand-new equipment that meets international standards, with preparations complete for the two-day competition.
NTF president Tayo Popoola said on Wednesday that everything was in place for the event and expressed confidence that the upgraded facilities would give competitors extra incentive to perform at their highest level.
The championship is sponsored by Opeyemi Bamidele, a former Lagos State Commissioner for Sports and former Commissioner for Information and Strategy, who is now a senator of the Federal Republic. The tournament is also intended to form part of the federation’s preparation for future international assignments, including the African Games and the Olympic Games.
Bamidele regards sport as an important tool for strengthening national unity and creating opportunities for young people, and he has previously supported a range of sporting initiatives.
Popoola said the federation was determined to deliver an event worthy of its sponsor’s demand for excellence. She added that the new equipment had already been secured and would ensure athletes enjoyed competing in what is planned as a world-class taekwondo meeting in Nigeria.
Representatives from every state, as well as the Federal Capital Territory, are expected to attend. Clubs from across the country will also compete, while paramilitary organisations have indicated their intention to participate.
The action will take place at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium on Friday and Saturday, September 18 and 19.
