
Nigeria’s Folashade Oluwafemiayo dedicated her record-breaking gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games to her husband and children after delivering a world-record performance in the Women’s Heavyweight Para Powerlifting event.
World record delivers Nigeria’s top finish
The reigning Commonwealth champion powered her way to first place with a world-record lift of 134.8kg, establishing a new benchmark in the Women’s Heavyweight Para Powerlifting competition.
Her success also helped secure another strong result for Nigeria, with a compatriot following her across the podium to complete a one-two finish.

Emotional tribute to family after victory
Speaking emotionally after the win, Oluwafemiayo framed the medal as payback for the sacrifices her family has made and the support they have consistently offered throughout her career.
She added that while her husband was not present at the Games, his belief in her has remained a driving force in her journey.
What Oluwafemiayo said
“It brings me great happiness. My husband is not here, but he is my backbone. He keeps encouraging me and always tells me, ‘You can do it, my wife.’ I’m truly grateful to him,” she said.
