Nigeria’s fencing coach Ibrahim Alogba says Oghenegaren Osievwa-Thompson’s Commonwealth Fencing Championships triumph has restored belief within the national programme and could usher in a fresh chapter for the sport.
A Gold Medal That Has Changed Belief
Alogba regards Osievwa-Thompson’s success on the piste as a major breakthrough for Nigerian fencing, which has frequently seen its athletes miss out on the highest honours.
He described the title as an enormous boost, saying the champion had given fellow fencers a role model and shown them that similar success was within their reach.
“This is a tremendous blessing for fencing in Nigeria,” Alogba said. “Our athletes now have somebody they can emulate. Her achievement has made them believe that they can succeed as well.”
Renewed Commitment to Training
The coach said the impact of the victory was already being felt across the squad, with a number of fencers recommitting themselves to their preparations.
- Several athletes have responded to the win by promising to work harder and remain fully committed.
- Alogba said their new attitude had created a powerful source of motivation and left him convinced that Nigerian fencing could achieve anything.
“Many of our athletes are now saying they are committed and ready,” he said. “That level of motivation cannot be bought. Right now, I believe nothing is beyond us.”
He added that the renewed attention was reaching beyond fencing’s traditional participants. Competitors from other sports are increasingly considering fencing as a realistic route to international success.
Historic Leadership Appointment
Osievwa-Thompson’s medal came at the same time as another significant moment for Nigeria, as Adeyinka Samuel was chosen to lead the Commonwealth Fencing Federation.
Samuel became the first African to serve as president of the organisation, an achievement he described as important for both Nigeria and the wider continent.
“It is a major accomplishment for Nigeria and Africa,” Samuel said. “There is considerable work to do, but I am confident that my vision and plans can deliver positive results.”
Plans for Wider Development
Samuel said his agenda would focus on building stronger links among the federation’s members, widening participation and guaranteeing fair opportunities throughout the Commonwealth fencing community.
- He plans to use his experience in African fencing to help strengthen development at grassroots level.
- Schools will be engaged to discover and nurture young fencing talent.
- He also wants to work with equipment manufacturers to reduce the cost of fencing gear and make the sport more accessible.
