
Plateau State referee Aweng Solomon Maram died after collapsing during a pre-season fitness assessment at Abuja’s MKO Abiola National Stadium yesterday.

The assessment was arranged by the Nigeria Football Federation’s Referees Development Unit as part of the Nigeria Referees Association’s preparations for the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League campaign. Maram reportedly fell during the running section of the physical test and was declared dead soon afterwards.
In an obituary announcement, the Plateau State Referees Council called his death a monumental blow to the officiating community and offered condolences to his relatives and fellow officials.
The family and the council will communicate details of the funeral at a later date.
