Rangers International FC have submitted a petition to the Confederation of African Football over alleged acts of vandalism and crowd disorder at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta following their CAF Champions League victory against MC Alger.
The Enugu club beat the Algerian side 2-0 on Sunday, but said concerns emerged afterwards over reported damage to facilities at the venue and incidents allegedly involving visiting fans.
Rangers said the matters raised included the reported destruction of an entrance gate, access to the stadium without payment of gate charges, damage to seats and further disorderly behaviour.
“The club has raised concerns over the reported destruction of a stadium entrance gate, unauthorised access without payment of gate fees, vandalism of stadium seats and other acts of disorder,” Rangers said in a statement.
The club has asked CAF to intervene and to consider preventive steps before the return fixture, which is set for Friday, October 23, in Algiers, Algeria.
Rangers reiterated their support for fair play, adherence to football rules and the protection of players, match officials, supporters and every other stakeholder involved in the tie.
The Nigerian side said it trusted CAF’s existing processes and was waiting for the continental body’s response to its submission.
Rangers also appealed to their fans to stay composed and orderly, while keeping their attention on the second leg against MC Alger.
