Rivers United are in Côte d’Ivoire for Saturday’s CAF Champions League first preliminary-round first leg against FC San Pedro.
The Port Harcourt team left Abuja yesterday on an Air Côte d’Ivoire flight. Their journey took them to Abidjan before they continued on to San Pedro.
Finidi George’s squad will meet the Ivorian club at the Laurent Pokou Stadium, where the match is set to begin at 4pm local time, or 5pm in Nigeria.
Rivers United return to the continental competition with valuable recent experience. Last season, they reached the group stage and subsequently progressed to the knockout rounds.
That background may be significant when they face a San Pedro outfit expected to draw confidence from playing on home ground.
The Nigerian club have also made a promising start to the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League campaign, providing Finidi’s side with early momentum before their continental assignment.
Abdulrasheed Dabai found the net in Rivers United’s opening league match, with Wasiu Falolu also making a notable contribution to the victory.
San Pedro nevertheless have dangerous options of their own. Jean Ariel Koffi is one of the hosts’ main attacking threats, while Abi Niambe and Issouf Dosso may also have influential parts to play.
Rivers United will be seeking a favourable result in Côte d’Ivoire so they can take a strong advantage into the second leg on Nigerian soil.
