Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has warned that Victor Boniface must not repeat his reported decision to leave for the tunnel before the end of Saturday’s dramatic 4-3 victory against Mainz.
Incident during Mainz win
- Boniface was still among the substitutes when coach Carles Martínez made his last changes in the 84th minute, introducing Equi Fernández and Jonas Hofmann.
- The Nigerian forward was then reported to have headed down the tunnel rather than remaining with the squad on the bench.
- Rolfes addressed the matter after the final whistle, saying Boniface may have returned to the dressing room too soon but insisting that it would not be repeated.
Martínez to discuss situation with striker
Martínez said he had not seen the episode while the match was under way, but indicated he would talk to Boniface if the account was confirmed.
“I understand that every player wants to contribute to the team, but these kinds of decisions are also part of football,” Martínez said.
Boniface has found opportunities limited for Leverkusen this season. However, the club remain positive about his physical condition and his work in training, giving the striker a route to fight his way back into Martínez’s plans.
