Lagos State First Lady Dr. Ibironke Sanwo-Olu, wife of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has confirmed her attendance at the Breast Cancer Awareness Interclub Tennis Tournament at Ikoyi Club 1938 on Saturday, October 24.
The First Lady is said to be particularly enthusiastic about an occasion designed to extend beyond competitive tennis, with breast cancer education set to be a central focus for players and guests.
Ikoyi Club Tennis Section Lady Captain Nora Azubuike welcomed the growing interest in the event, which is expected to attract a number of prominent guests. Former Nigeria international footballer Chief Segun Odegbami and Lagos State Sports Commission Director-General Lekan Fatodu have also confirmed that they will attend.
“We are happy with the progress of registrations and every other aspect of the preparations,” Azubuike said. “Her Excellency has confirmed that she will join us, while other notable personalities are also expected at the event.
“As I have stressed on several occasions, this is not simply a tennis competition. It is important for women to gain greater awareness of breast cancer and other health-related concerns.”
Azubuike said the host, Ikoyi Club 1938, will be joined by Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Lagos Country Club and Heritage Club. The interclub contest will be played exclusively in the doubles format.
Alongside the matches, organisers have scheduled a range of health and wellness programmes. These include a breast cancer awareness session, instruction on self-examination, and testimonies from survivors, who will share their experiences to promote hope and highlight the value of early detection. Free breast cancer screening, blood-pressure testing and massage sessions will also be available.
Support for the tournament has come from Leadway Assurance, Leadway Pensions, Renaissance Medical Centre, Prime Atlantic, Fidelity Bank, Zenith Bank, Lukefield Investment and Ash Luxury.
Healthcare specialists and senior government officials are also expected to be present at the Ikoyi Club 1938 tennis courts for the competition and its associated awareness activities.
